  3. Modification of the Mires

  5. The mire can be modified to make it easier to determine when the mires are properly overlapped and give better repeatability.  The center of the one plus sign can be 
  6. blacked out and the extent of the other 
  7. one decreased on the mire object plate
  8. (on the front of the instrument).  This 
  9. allows the plus signs to be aligned using 
  10. vernier acuity which is more accurate 
  11. than just overlapping the plus signs.  The 
  12. mires are moved until a full plus sign is 
  13. formed. Likewise, the center of one 
  14. minus sign can be blacked out and the 
  15. other one shortened.
